A question of Degree

Watchmaking is an art, as well as a science. Any watch will (hopefully) tell the time, but at Harold Pinchbeck we like to think that our timepieces do a bit more than fulfil this basic need.

I don’t mean the ability to send and receive messages, or other ‘smart’ functions: I am thinking of deeper, longer-lasting qualities to celebrate one of life’s landmarks: birthdays, weddings, graduations and retirements.

These associations take the timepiece beyond mere functionality into another realm: a gift to treasure for a lifetime. We often think about these aspects when we are designing and building watches: hardly surprising when we are based in what may be the most historic premises of any watchmaker (the leaded diamond window panes in our 14th Century office overlook a Norman castle and a medieval cathedral).

Recently these matchless views have been enhanced by the sight of thousands of students processing to their graduation ceremonies in the Cathedral. It’s a red-letter day for each student, that celebrates successful studies and heralds the next phase in their life and career.

An ideal occasion, in fact, for a beautiful, stylish watch: perhaps personalised to make it even more special, keeping time for decades to come.
