Made In the shadow of the Cathedral

When we say we work in the shadow of Lincoln Cathedral, we mean it.

Our workshop is directly opposite the West Front, inside Exchequer Gate Arch, the medieval gateway built in the 14th century. It’s not something we chose because it made a good line for the website. It’s simply where our studio is.

And we rather like that.

Walk through the arch and you arrive at our little corner of Lincoln. The old stone, the Cathedral, cobbled streets around us. Then, behind the door, things become a little more familiar. There’s the workshop, the benches, the tools, the watches we’re working on and all the small jobs that make up an ordinary day at Pinchbeck.

It’s a slightly unusual setting for a watchmaker.

The Cathedral quarter has been part of this part of Lincoln for hundreds of years. Our workshop is considerably newer, but there is something fitting about making watches here. We spend our days working on objects that are designed to stay around for a long time, in a place that has already seen quite a lot of it.

And then there is the view.

From the workshop, we can look across at the Cathedral. Depending on the light, its stone changes colour and the shadows move across the buildings around us. Sometimes it feels very much like we are working in its shadow. Because we are.

It has become part of the everyday rhythm of the place. The walk through Exchequer Gate in the morning. The Cathedral outside the window. The old stone around the workshop. Then the rather less historic business of getting on with the watches.

That contrast is probably what we like most.

We’re a small, modern watchmaking business working from a medieval archway in the middle of Lincoln. Rob assembles the watches in the workshop. Jason works on the designs. Paul keeps the whole thing moving. And the rest of us get on with the many things that come with running a small independent watchmaker.

There’s no grand story we need to attach to it.

This is simply where we are.
