The Cathedral

We see Lincoln Cathedral every day.

It is one of those things you can get used to, until the light changes and you suddenly notice it again.

That was what caught us in Dominic Parczuk's painting. He had taken the Cathedral and painted it in the evening, with the sky already dark and the last of the light sitting around Castle Square. The Cathedral itself is warm against that deep blue sky, and there is something about the whole scene that feels very familiar to us.

It feels like Lincoln in the winter.

The days are shorter. You leave the workshop and it is already getting dark. The streets are quieter, the sky is deep blue, and then you see the Cathedral above you, still lit up.

There is something comforting about that.

We have lived and worked here for a long time, and the Cathedral has always been part of the view. You might walk past it without really thinking about it, then catch sight of it from a different street or see it lit up on your way home. It is a reminder that some things stay where they are. They have been there for generations, and they will still be there when we are gone.

That feeling was what we wanted to bring into the Cathedral watch.

Dominic’s painting sits on the back of the watch, so when you turn it over you see the Cathedral as he saw it that evening, glowing above the city. On the front, Jason has taken some of the feeling from the Cathedral’s stained glass and brought it into the dial.

It is not just a picture of the place where we happen to work.

It is a little piece of home.

And perhaps that is what we like most about it. A watch leaves the workshop with someone and goes on to become part of their life. This one carries a small part of ours with it too.

The Cathedral will still be standing above Lincoln tonight. We will probably see it on our way home.
